The life lessons contained in chapters 10-14 pertain to both Chris/Alex and Krakauer.

Lessons that pertain to Chris are that when someone likes something they should stick to it. Chris liked working with Westerberg and yet he left, and this choice ended up being fatal.

Another life lesson is to forgive, but not forget. Chris did the opposite, or at least he tried. He left his family in an effort to not have any connections with his past life, and yet he held a grudge with his parents.

Krakauer teaches us to know our limits, and respect them. He shows us this when he is climbing the mountain and acknowledges that it would be a bad idea to keep going.

Krakauer also teaches us to prepare for failure. He prepared for his journey by knowing how to proceed should something unexpected happen.
